Thanksgiving Host Tips

Thanksgiving will look different in 2020, there is no doubt about that. As part of this Greater Lafayette, IN community, we’d like to equip you with ideas and tools to make the choice to do what’s best for your family and friends. Here’s a brief list of tips for the usual host of the Thanksgiving dinner to do just that- make the best decision for their different holiday season.

Make a plan!

A plan saves the day for all holiday events! Know what you’re going to cook beforehand, grocery shop all at once, coordinate the menu with other guests and what they’re bringing (delegate if you need to!), and make ahead anything you can!

Consider the weather

2020 begs the question: can this year’s event be held outside? The Greater Lafayette, IN weather can be somewhat unpredictable in late November, but there might be room to consider an outdoor, bundled-up celebration. The CDC recommends outdoor events to be better than indoor, but if the event needs to be inside, choose a non-congested area with good ventilation. “Increase ventilation by opening windows and doors to the extent that is safe and feasible based on the weather.”

Prepare with Supplies

This year, there are more items than normal to think about providing for the guests in your home. In addition to your usual plates, napkins, cups, utensils, etc, consider these items for your Thanksgiving dinner.

Individual, disposable drinks: Single bottle and cans alleviate the need to touch the same bottle to get a beverage.

Masks: This is specifically aimed toward anyone with COVID-19 high risk friends and family members. Masks are a recommendation by the CDC to help stop the spread of COVID-19. Providing your guests with disposable masks is a potential aid to you, as the host, when planning your Thanksgiving event.

Sanitizer: If in doubt, sanitize, sanitize, sanitize. Provide hand sanitizer for your guests. Think of the restroom and provide an easy, clean access with as little traffic movement through the house as possible. Maybe even some Lysol wipes for guests to wipe the toilet seat after use!
